Action App
Pause a workflow and assign a task to a human in an app with its own interface, built in App Studio, Studio Web, or as a coded action app.
Action App pauses the workflow and assigns a task to a human in an app with its own interface. The human works in the app, and the workflow continues with what they submit. It's in the Human category of the Add node panel.
The app is built separately: visually in UiPath App Studio or Studio Web, or as a coded action app, a custom React or Angular application. About Coded Action Apps describes coded apps.
When to use Action App vs Quick Form
| Quick Form | Action App | |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | Built on the node, saved with the workflow | A separate app, deployed on its own |
| Reuse across workflows | Yes, by copying and pasting the form's JSON | Yes |
| Cost | No additional units, no app needed | Requires deploying the app |
| Layout | Multi-column and multi-width layouts | Full control |
| Data shown to the human | Values from the workflow only | Also assets, buckets, connections, and Data Fabric, through the app |
| Testing | In debug mode, on the canvas | Build, deploy, then run |
| Skills needed | None | App Studio, or React or Angular for coded apps |
Tip:
Start with a Quick Form. Move to an Action App when you need to reuse the same interface across workflows, show data the workflow doesn't already carry, or build an interface a form can't express.
Set it up
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Assignment criteria | Yes | Who gets the task, for example Single User and the user's name. Quick Form describes the options, which are the same for both nodes. |
| Delivery channels | — | Where the task appears, such as Action Center, email, Slack, or Microsoft Teams. Only an administrator can change them. |
| Action App | Yes | The app to show the human. Select it from the apps available to you. |
| Inputs | Depends on the app | The values the app expects, with their types. Set each one to a value from earlier nodes, using { } Insert. |
Next steps
- Quick Form: build a simpler form directly on the node.
