Frequently asked questions

Capabilities and vision

What is UiPath IXP?

UiPath® IXP, or Intelligent Xtraction and Processing, is a multi-modal data extraction capability that converts unstructured data to a structured format for automation and analytics. IXP identifies and extracts the information from documents or communications and enables end-to-end automation in areas previously untouched.

What data types can IXP process?

UiPath IXP brings together the existing IDP capabilities (Document Understanding™ and Communications Mining™), with a new prompt-driven capability for unstructured and high-complexity documents (Generative Extraction for unstructured and complex documents).

Is UiPath Communications Mining part of IXP?

Yes, you can access Communications Mining capabilities through the IXP service in Automation Cloud by navigating to the Communications data capability. For more details, check Accessing capabilities.

Is UiPath Document Understanding part of IXP?

Yes, Document Understanding is still a standalone service in Automation Cloud, but you can access it through the IXP service by navigating to the Structured and semi-structured documents capability. For more details, check Accessing capabilities.

Document Understanding will continue to be available for customers using Automation Suite or Standalone deployment. As it remains a standalone service, it is still governed by its own access management experience and permissions.

What is the long-term vision for IXP?

The long-term vision for UiPath® IXP is a multi-modal data extraction capability that can process a broad range of content types, including documents, communications, images, and more. The X represents the growing number of diverse content and data types supported. IXP enables UiPath to maintain leadership in the Intelligent Document Processing category (IDP) and expand leadership within any new associated categories that may form.

How does the IXP release impact Communications Mining customers?

There are no changes that disrupt existing Communications Mining users or their production models and automations. Communications Mining users need to access Communications Mining through the IXP service. For more details, check Accessing capabilities.

How does the IXP release impact Document Understanding customers?

There are no changes that disrupt existing Document Understanding users or their Unstructured and complex document production models and automations. Document Understanding remains a standalone service, with the same access and governance as before.

What is the impact on my existing automations?

There are no changes that will disrupt any existing automations.

What is the impact on my cost?

There are no changes in pricing for Communications Mining or Document Understanding Classic/Modern experience. We do not charge for the Unstructured and complex documents capability while in private preview. More details on the Unstructured and complex documents pricing will be shared before general availability.

How does IXP consume AI units?

Check the following table for a simple breakdown of the IXP AI Unit consumption:

IXP capabilityCommunications MiningGenerative Extraction for unstructured and complex documentsDocument Understanding
AI Unit consumption1 AI Unit per  message  (design-time and run-time inclusive)

1 AI Unit per page

(run-time)

Not applicable to private preview consumption.

  • Modern experience

1 AI Unit per page at run-time.

Generative Validation will consume an additional AI unit per page.

  • Classic experience
Varies per operation or feature used (design-time and run-time).

Note: Combining various IXP capabilities, such as Modern projects and the Unstructured and Complex documents capability, will result in additional AI unit consumption, and respective pricing models will be applied for each capability separately.

For more details, check the Flex Plan.

How does IXP consume Platform units?

Check the following table for a simple breakdown of the IXP Platform Unit consumption:

Platform Unit consumption0.2 Platform Units per message (design-time and run-time inclusive)

0.2 Platform Units per page (run-time)

Includes intent, entity, and tone detection, Active Learning, and analytics.

For more details, check Unified Pricing.

Choosing the correct IXP capability

Does the Unstructured and complex documents capability have the same functionality as DU Classic/Modern experience? How are they different?

The Unstructured and complex documents capability does not have any splitting or classification capabilities, it is extraction only. Additionally, it is a prompt-based capability that leverages generative AI and does not use any specialized pre-built models. Currently, it does not learn from any user annotations or validation, which is the main difference compared to the Classic or Modern experience.

What does the Unstructured and complex documents capability mean for DU Generative Extraction activities?

Currently, Unstructured and complex documents supports documents up to 50 pages. Support for documents between 50 and 150 pages is currently in preview. Meanwhile, if you need to process unstructured documents with more than 50 pages, you can use the Document Understanding Long Document Complex Layout generative extractor, available only in Studio. For more details on Document Understanding Generative Extraction activities, refer to Generative Extractor.

Note: We will continue to support Document Understanding Generative Extraction activities, but we will no longer prioritize any further improvements to this capability.

What does the Unstructured and complex documents capability mean for AI Center?

AI Center is being deprecated in multiple phases:

  • Phase 1 deprecation (Open-Source Packages and OOTB Models) was announced in December 2024
  • Phase 2 deprecation (Bring Your Own Models) was announced in February 2025

It's important to note that UiPath will provide alternatives for each deprecated capability, including IXP, Integration Services, or UiPath GenAI activities. These new solutions are designed to replace the deprecated functionality with improved capabilities. Additionally, UiPath will continue supporting all deprecated capabilities for some time, following the official announcement. Check the AI Center Upcoming deprecations page for additional information on specific timelines and suggested alternatives.

When should I use which capability?

The capability will vary based on the data and document types that need to be processed. Generally, we recommend using:

  • The Communications Mining capability for email or ticket use cases.
  • Document Understanding Modern or Classic projects for structured and semi-structured documents.
  • The Unstructured and complex documents capability when:
    • You need to extract data from documents that contain paragraphs of free-form text or complex elements, that is, complex tables, graphics, charts, checkboxes, call-out boxes, signatures, handwriting, and more.
    • Your documents contain inferred values, which are values that are not extracted as-is from the document.
    • There is a significant variation in the layout of documents and fields that you need to extract.
    • You need to extract data from multiple document types, included as one in a stack of documents, without having to split them.

For further details on IXP capabilities and their intended use cases, check Choosing the correct capability.

Why wouldn’t I use the Unstructured and complex documents capability for any documents if it requires less training and time to deploy?

The Unstructured and complex documents capability can be used for any document type, including structured or semi-structured documents. However, the Unstructured and complex documents capability has been optimized for more complex use cases, where the traditional Document Understanding capabilities or extractors struggle. Additionally, you might benefit from specialized OOTB models, custom model fine-tuning, and retraining for continuous improvement when using Document Understanding Modern or Classic projects.

IXP positioning in agentic automation

How will IXP work with Agents?

IXP and Agents can work together, along with robots and humans, to automate end-to-end processes. Agents call various tools to complete their tasks, and IXP can be one of these tools.

The main benefit of using IXP as a tool is feeding Agents reliable, structured data.

We are currently exploring the Agent receiving the IXP model output as input.
