What's new

Introducing Automation Suite on OpenShift

Overview

Ever since we released the first Automation Suite flavor, it has been our priority to make the UiPath® automation platform available on the widest possible array of environments. The next step on this journey is Automation Suite on OpenShift, which allows you to deploy the UiPath® platform on the popular OpenShift Container Platform from Red Hat. The new offering is the third Automation Suite flavor we make available, in addition to Automation Suite on Linux and Automation Suite on EKS/AKS. For a summary and comparison of the architecture, features, deployment scenarios, etc. specific to each Automation Suite flavor, see Cross-deployment model feature comparison.

In addition to providing its own Kubernetes solution, OpenShift offers a rich ecosystem that includes its own service mesh, GitOps tool, objectstore, cache, and so much more, delivering a unified, seamless customer experience.

Automation Suite on OpenShift products

Automation Suite on OpenShift enables you to install the following UiPath® products:

Some Automation Suite products have additional dependencies on each other. For details, see Cross-product dependencies.

Installation experience

To ensure commonality between Automation Suite flavors, Automation Suite on OpenShift relies on the unified uipathctl tool for all the major tasks related to pre-installation, installation, cluster administration, etc. For an in-depth look at the uipathctl capabilities, see the uipathctl Reference Guide.
You can further refine your installation configuration by editing the input.json cluster configuration file. You can edit the file using one of the following methods:
  • For full control over all the parameters and values, edit the input.json file manually.
  • To simplify the sometimes challenging task of editing multiple parameters and flags, use the Automation Suite Installer Wizard.

The Automation Suite Installer Wizard is a GUI-centric tool that guides you through the key configuration steps, prompting you to provide details about your Automation Suite installation. It requires details such as the targeted platform, environment type, storage needs, SQL database specifics, and more, subsequently generating the input.json file for you.

As the tool is in public preview, some complex configuration scenarios might not yet be covered. We eagerly invite you to experiment with the wizard and share your feedback to help us improve this feature. For details, see Generating the configuration file using a GUI-based wizard.

For a quick look at the Automation Suite installation prerequisites, see Prerequisites at a glance.

For Automation Suite installation instructions, see Installing Automation Suite.

Migration options

You can migrate standalone UiPath® products to Automation Suite on OpenShift, with support for single-tenant migration. For details, see Single-tenant migration.

You can also migrate between Automation Suite clusters, with support for the following scenarios:
  • Migrate from Automation Suite on Linux to a new installation of Automation Suite on Automation Suite on OpenShift;

  • Migrate from Automation Suite on EKS/AKS to a new installation of Automation Suite on OpenShift;

  • Migrate from Automation Suite on OpenShift to a new installation of Automation Suite on EKS/AKS

The following migration scenarios are not supported:
  • Migrating from Automation Suite on Linux to an existing installation of Automation Suite on OpenShift;

  • Migrating an Automation Suite on OpenShift cluster to another Automation Suite on OpenShift cluster.

Shared cluster support

You can deploy Automation Suite either on a dedicated, newly provisioned OpenShift cluster or on a existing cluster, which Automation Suite can share with your other software deployments. A shared cluster deployment can reduce the total cost of ownership and bring you more flexibility.

While deploying Automation Suite on a dedicated cluster involves running the Automation Suite installer with admin privileges, a shared cluster deployment enables you to complete the installation process without granting admin privileges to the Automation Suite installer. Running the installer without admin privileges enhances the security of your deployment by allowing you to adopt industry-wide security practices such as the principle of least privilege, which enables you to meet stringent governance standards.

How to navigate the docs

Here are some tips and tricks on navigating the Automation Suite docs:

Known issues

Document Understanding limitations

In this release, Document Understanding modern projects are not supported in Automation Suite Openshift environments.

Full migration from standalone products to Automation Suite not supported

You cannot currently perform a full migration from standalone products version 2024.10 to Automation Suite 2024.10 using the UiPath.OrganizationMigrationApp tool. We are actively working on introducing support for this scenario.

In the meantime, you can perform a single-tenant migration. For details on this migration option, refer to Single tenant migration.

No FIPS 140-2 support for Insights

Insights is not supported on FIPS 140-2. If you install Automation Suite on FIPS 140-2-enabled machines, you must disable Insights.

For details on FIPS 140-2, see Security and compliance.

Custom security context requirement for Insights

Insights requires a custom security context to run on Automation Suite on OpenShift. For details, see Configuring the Insights custom security context.
