WebView2 Runtime is not available

Description

When some UI Automation activities attempt to display web content during design time, it requires Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime to be installed on the machine. If this component is missing, an error indicates that WebView2 is not available.

Cause

Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is not installed on the machine.

Solution

To ensure proper installation, ensure you cover the following requirements:

  • Operate on a machine using Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • Ensure you have administrator access on the machine.
  • If the installer fails behind a proxy, ensure your network allows connections to Microsoft download servers, or use Evergreen Standalone Installer.
  • The bootstrapper installs per-machine by default, but for per-user installation or silent deployment, refer to WebView2 documentation.

To install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, take the following steps:

  1. Download Evergreen Bootstrapper.
  2. Run the downloaded MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe file.
  3. If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), select Yes to allow the installer to run.
  4. Wait for the installer to download and install the WebView2 Runtime.

To verify the installation, take the following steps:

  1. In your browser, navigate to Settings.
  2. Select Apps, and then select Installed apps.
  3. Search for Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
    Note:

If it appears in the list, the installation was successful. No restart is required.
