Root cause analysis (Preview)

What is root cause analysis?

When analyzing a business process, you may want to determine which field valuess are most associated with a certain outcome. This should help you to act on the root causes associated with the outcome. For example, in the Purchase-to-Pay process, you may want to analyze which field values have a high association with maverick buying.

With Root cause analysis, you can compare the influence of selected fields on a certain behavior to find significant data influencers for specific process situations. A set of reference objects is defined based on the Timeframe filter. This set is called Reference objects. Within this set of objects, you can select the behavior that you want to analyze by applying filters. For example, objects with a certain tag. This set is called the Selected objects. The influence of a field value is based on the number of occurrences in the selected objects.

Note: For performance reasons, the counts of Reference objects and Selected objects are approximated. Although this may introduce a small margin of error, the reported numbers remain accurate enough to perform reliable root cause analysis.

Root cause analysis dashboard

Selecting the object used for Root cause analysis

If multiple objects are available for the data model of your process app, you can select a different object for analysis. This enables you to perform a root cause analysis from another point of view and to compare the influence of object properties related to a different object.

To select a different object, locate the Influence of selection on list, and select the object from the list.

KPIs

The following table describes the KPIs displayed on the Root cause analysis dashboard.

KPIDescription
Global Baseline PercentageThe percentage of Selected objects in the Reference objects.
Global Selected ObjectsThe number of Selected objects.
Global Reference ObjectsThe number of Reference objects.

Show significant influencers option

The Show significant influencers option enables you to zoom in by only displaying the field values with a statistical significant influence. This should help you identify the field values that have the most influence on the selection. The statistical significance is computed based on both the Influence (%) and the number of objects a certain field value has.

Root cause analysis chart

The following table describes the columns of the Root cause analysis bar chart.

ColumnDescription
FieldThe name of the field being analyzed.
ValueThe value of the field used for root cause analysis.
Influence %
  • Indicates how much deviation or change has occurred from the Global Baseline Percentage due to the specific field value(s).
  • Enables you to identify which field values have the most significant impact and hence could be the potential root cause for a given problem or change.
  • Calculated as Selected (%) - Global Baseline Percentage.
Selected %
  • Indicates the percentage of objects that are selected and also have the field value listed in the Value column.
  • Calculated as (Selected objects / Reference objects) * 100.
Selected objects
  • The number of objects that remain in scope after applying all filters.
  • Indicates how many selected objects have the field value listed in the Value column.
Reference objects
  • The number of objects that remain in scope after applying just the Timeframe filter.
  • Indicates how many reference objects have the field value listed in the Value column.
Drill downEnables you to add a layer for the Root cause analysis, based on the field.

Layers

By default, all the fields available for the object are selected for root cause analysis, and the influence of all the fields is displayed in the chart.

By using layers, you can fix certain fields and then analyze how the combination of those fields with all other fields influences the outcome.

Adding layers can be done in two ways:

  • Select the drill down icon in the drill down column for the field on which you want to add a layer
  • Deselect all fields in the Field selector except the one you want to keep as a layer. The Add layer (+ icon) becomes enabled.
Tip: You can also select the fields you want to include in the root cause analysis from the Fields list.
